Animal Alphabet Series

A whimsical and eclectic spin on the alphabet, incorporating animals, nature and everything in between. Each Illustration is a puzzle of sorts, requiring the viewer to study closely at all of the elements that fill each composition in order to find all of the elements that correspond with that letter.

This is a passion project that I started during Covid and took me FIVE years to complete. I started with spelling out my son's name ROWAN and I have worked through every letter since, slowly but surely.

Besides the actual letters themselves, every element is hand-drawn and digitally captured using stylus on a tablet. Every item in each piece starts with the corresponding letter, even down to the name of the color of the letter itself.

People have often asked me how I choose the items that are in each letter. I have a few rules: there must be at least one animal (although most contain 2), one flower or plant, one type of food, and all of the letters themselves must be the same font and size. And as for the other stuff, it's wide open. I try to pick things that have some sort of meaning to me, but it all really depends on what works within the parameters of that letter and the composition as a whole. It's really just a puzzle that I try to piece together, and I try to approach each letter individually. And while I try to keep all of the animals as anatomically correct as possible, I don't get too wrapped up with the logical rules of space, size or the laws of physics anywhere else. And for those who don’t know, I always hide a few little Easter eggs in each illustration too, so be sure to look very closely!
